In recent years, Protection Dogs Worldwide has restarted training and selling working Rottweilers as family protection dogs. These magnificent dogs are true working animals, and we have been fortunate enough to find well-bred lines we are confident meet the demands of family protection work. Working Rottweilers can make excellent family pets as well as guardians, and a little understanding of the breed goes a long way in setting them up for success as a family protection dog.
Rottweilers were originally bred to herd cattle and guard their owners. This role required high levels of stamina, athleticism, and intelligence. The modern working Rottweiler has retained these characteristics, and is best suited to an active owner committed to bringing the best out of their dog. Regular obedience and scenario-based protection training, long walks, tracking, and agility are all good enrichment options and activities for a working Rottweiler. These will help you bond with your dog, and ultimately strengthen your shared relationship. Rottweilers can be somewhat prone to obesity, so it is very much an owner’s responsibility to safeguard against this with proper nutrition and activity levels. As with any other dog, a working Rottweiler should be thoroughly socialised and exposed to a range of environments and stimuli.
Despite their intelligence and love of work, Rottweilers are equally comfortable enjoying quality time at home with their family. A Rottweiler will naturally form strong bonds with its immediate family, and thrives when around them. A well-bred and trained Rottweiler will be reliable, temperamentally stable, obedient, and loving. It will be excellent with children, and easily assimilate into family life. Rottweilers will work for and protect those they love with their life. Time spent invested in bonding will pay dividends in a worst-case scenario if truly needed.
In many ways, Rottweilers are an ideal breed for family protection work. Their intelligence lends them to readily accepting training while their courage and devotion make them formidable guardians. They can be equally calm and loving, though, and are excellent with children.
