Giant Schnauzers as family protection dogs

19 Aug 2024

The Giant Schnauzer is a rare, but highly effective breed becoming increasingly popular for family protection work. Originating as an all-purpose farm dog in Germany, the working Giant Schnauzer was expected to undertake a range of tasks including herding, guarding livestock and the homestead from thieves and intruders, and vermin control. This required high levels of intelligence and versatility, as well as a strong protective drive which makes the Giant Schnauzer such a strong working breed. It is also hypoallergenic, and more suitable for those who suffer from allergies than a more heavily shedding breed.

Given their high intelligence and energy levels, an active home is a must for any Giant Schnauzer. As well as spending quality time with their family, they will enjoy and benefit from regular and vigorous exercise, obedience training, scentwork, and activities such as agility courses. The Giant Schnauzer can also lean towards suspicion and standoffishness with strangers, so considered socialisation and careful introductions to unfamiliar humans and animals is a must.

As they are relatively rare in the UK, a Giant Schnauzer may not immediately be recognised as a protection. In fact, they are often confused for a Labradoodle or other Poodle cross so may be a good choice for owners who do not want to draw attention to the fact that they have a protection dog.
