Family Protection Dogs and Children

10 Feb 2019

One of the most common questions we are asked at Protection Dogs Worldwide is whether or not our dogs are safe around children. In a word, the answer is yes. Our company is proud to only supply trained protection dogs, which complete rigorous training and extensive temperament testing. Our dogs are also exposed to small children from a very early stage, so are familiar with family-style environments. In fact, most of our dogs are suitable for family environments precisely they are accustomed to and enjoy spending time with children.

However, this is not without caveats. As with any pet, it is important to ensure that your children understand the importance of respecting, and having certain boundaries around your protection dogs. While all the breeds we sell are naturally affectionate and known for their ability to form strong bonds with their families, including children. To this end, allowing your children to take responsibility for much of the day to day care your dog will require is an excellent idea. Not only will this allow your children to become more responsible, but the bond with the dog will increase as they become associated with important and present activities and experiences such as walks, feeding, grooming, and playtime.

One of the most important parts of our sales process is introducing prospective clients to the dog they may wish to purchase. This will take the form of a home visit, and we highly recommend that your children are present for this as well. While compatibility with the family environment is a prerequisite is dogs must reach before being sold, it is useful for you to be able to see this for yourself, and also for your children to meet what may become the new dog for the first time.
