The Cane Corso as A Protection Dog

26 Jul 2022

The Cane Corso has experienced a significant rise in its popularity in recent years, both as a companion and protection dog. It has enjoyed quite the change in fortunes, previously being at risk of extinction in the aftermath of the Second World War. Cane Corsos can make excellent protection dogs, and when well-bred offer all the characteristics a trainer desires in the modern working dog.

The Cane Corso originated in Italy and was initially employed as an all-purpose farm dog. Expected to do everything from herding cattle to hunting and guarding property, it is versatile, intelligent, and highly responsive to its handlers. Cane Corsos are a working breed through and through, and while closely related to the Neapolitan Mastiff is by far a superior working animal.

Because of their high levels of intelligence, Cane Corsos take well to training and thrive when offered good levels of physical and mental stimulation. Daily obedience sessions, long walks, scentwork, and toys that tap into their prey drive such as a flirt pole are all recommended. Rigorous obedience is the foundation for all work we undertake at Protection Dogs Worldwide, and an obedient Cane Corso offers vast potential for more advanced training.

As a mastiff-type breed, the Cane Corso naturally bonds with its family and has strong protective instincts. While desirable to an extent, this should always be carefully tempered. We recommend young Cane Corsos receive extensive socialisation with people and dogs alike, and our training heavily focuses on teaching them only to act when faced with a genuine threat. Training is an ongoing process, and we offer clients post-purchase aftercare which can include home visits or residential courses at our training facility in the North East of England.

Because of their popularity, it is a sad reality that Cane Corsos have become overbred. Unscrupulous breeders prioritising profit over welfare have lead to a proliferation of anxious and unhealthy Cane Corsos. It is of the upmost importance that buyers undertake due diligence and only purchase a Cane Corso from a reputable dealer. Protection Dogs Worldwide takes pride in only selling dogs which we believe are of sound temperament and good health, and this is an area we refuse to compromise on.
