Socialising protection dogs

18 Nov 2024

Socialisation is important for all dogs, especially those working in security and protection. Well socialised dogs are confident, able to work around a range of unfamiliar humans and animals, and remain suspicious but approachable. Dogs that are not socialised tend to be anxious, and scared of the unfamiliar they may incorrectly perceive to be a threat. This is undesirable in protection dogs who should instead be confident and responsive based on their training rather than skittish and reactive.

Starting early is key for effective socialisation, ideally during puppyhood. Dogs experience a critical imprinting period between 8-12 weeks of age when it is of paramount importance to positively expose them to a range of stimuli they are likely to come across as adults. This includes other dogs and unfamiliar humans, and failure to do so then can often result in anxiety and reactivity into adulthood.

Socialisation should be controlled and positive, ensuring that dogs are slowly exposed to a range of different people and environments without overwhelming them. Where desired behaviours and responses are observed, they should immediately be marked and rewarded so they are properly reinforced. Working breeds used for protection roles are naturally intelligence and trainable which should naturally accelerate this process as long as it is approached correctly and patiently.

The desired outcome is for a protection dog to watchfully accept the presence of an unthreatening stranger, but remain prepared to intervene if necessary. It is also important to balance socialisation and ensure your dog is exposed to friendly and trusted people and animals to avoid it becoming overly suspicious and protective.
