It is generally accepted that owners should feed their dogs at least twice in the day, usually first thing in the morning and then later towards evening time. While not a bad arrangement by any stretch of the imagination, it may nevertheless benefit from some reconsideration. Food is viewed by most dogs as a very high value resource. As such, it can be useful as a training aid, especially in the early stages of owning or fostering a new dog. Feeding your dog builds one of the most important associations possible, and often represents a wasted opportunity if not done mindfully in a way that facilitates bonding.
Rather than only having two feeding times in the day, we recommend considering halving each serving’s portion size and using the balance to incentivise positive behaviours during the day. For example, obeying commands during training sessions can be rewarded with a small handful of kibble, as can checking in by glancing at you and returning when called by name. Small portions of kibble can also be hidden around the house and garden meaning your dog must sniff it out, offering highly valuable nasal enrichment. While the amount a dog is fed throughout the day should remain the same, serving sizes are what changes.
Given that dogs thrive on routine and consistency, it is important to ensure that at least 2 of these meals remain at regular times which are not dramatically changed. For further advice, please email us on info@protectiondogs.co.uk.
