We are often asked why our family protection dogs justify their cost when potential buyers could instead rehome a former police or military working dog. These types of dogs are completely different, and it would be inappropriate and even irresponsible to try and repurpose a retired police or military working dog for family protection settings.
Police and military working dogs are first and foremost meant for a specific line of work. They are almost always kennelled and will generally not live in the same home as their handler. They exclusively work in the field, and are only rarely acclimatised to the kinds of stimuli they would encounter in home settings. They may also be poorly socialised beyond their handler and veterinary care team.
In contrast to this, family protection dogs live and are specially trained for the home environment. They will have been acclimatised to living and thriving in a household setting, and act as both a pet and protector. A family protection dog will stay with its family for its entire lifespan, and be able to interact with a range of people as opposed to viewing them as a threat that needs defending against. Family protection dogs can also have their training tailored and customised to the household they will join, whereas police and military working dogs are more generalist.
