Cane Corsos are one of our favourite breeds for family protection work. When well-bred, they offer everything we look for in a working dog. At its best, the Cane Corso is highly intelligent, trainable, affectionate, courageous, and protective. It is a formidable guardian that is equally comfortable as a family companion. Cane Corsos are wonderful dogs, and we adore them.
When getting a Cane Corso, it is important to fully understand the breed and its characteristics. This is particularly important if your dog is still a puppy, as how you treat it durinng its formative months years will shape it as it develops into an adult. At its heart, the Cane Corso is a naturally intelligent, physically active, and protective working breed that needs a job to be at its happiest. Given their size and strength, they demand responsible owners who can set and maintain healthy boundaries, as well as meet their physical and intellectual needs.
Taking responsibility for regular training is perhaps the best advice we can offer Cane Corso owners. Given their intelligence, Cane Corsos learn quickly and edible incentives often accelerate this process. Obedience training offers any number of benefits including promoting dog and owner bonding, teaching restraint and good manners, as well as the behaviours they are expected to perform on a daily basis such as sit, stay, heel, and leave. A well-trained Cane Corso will always be easier to handle and live with than an untrained one, and we cannot overemphasise the importance of doing so.
Similarly, owners should ensure that their Cane Corso is properly socialised with other humans and dogs. Undersocialised dogs can demonstrate anxious or aggressive behaviours, and in powerful breeds this will often be hard to manage. Socialisation, along with obedience training, make Cane Corsos much easier to handle in public, so should be a priority for all owners from the earliest possible opportunity.
Cane Corsos are sometimes referred to as “velcro dogs” because of their tendency to form strong bonds with their owners and family, seldom leaving their sides. Cane Corsos are incredibly loyal, and must be able to spend quality time with their family. This is perhaps their best form of enrichment, and what will lead to your dog being as happy as possible.
At Protection Dogs Worldwide, we have years of experience of training and placing young working Cane Corsos with families across the world. For more information about purchasing one of these dogs, or training your own one, please contact us on info@protectiondogs.co.uk.
