Giant Schnauzer Dog Breed Information

The Giant Schnauzer is a somewhat rarely encountered German dog breed, which also makes a competent family protection dog. Similarly to the German and Belgian Shepherd Dogs, it was originally bred as a general purpose farm dog, and intended to perform tasks such as livestock herding, guarding, and vermin control. As such, it is a highly intelligent, versatile, and trainable breed which is able to fulfil a number of functions. While retaining the temperament of a terrier, the Giant Schnauzer is nevertheless a friendly, playful, and bouncy dog, which excels in the right family environments.

The American Kennel Club describes the Giant Schnauzer as follows: “a larger and more powerful version of the Standard Schnauzer, on the whole a bold and valiant figure of a dog. Robust, strongly built, nearly square in proportion of body length to height at withers, active, sturdy, and well muscled. Temperament which combines spirit and alertness with intelligence and reliability. Composed, watchful, courageous, easily trained, deeply loyal to family, playful, amiable in repose, and a commanding figure when aroused. The sound, reliable temperament, rugged build, and dense weather-resistant wiry coat make for one of the most useful, powerful, and enduring working breeds”. Its generally black coat requires little in the way of special maintenance, but should be groomed regularly. The Giant Schnauzer is also a notably healthy breed, suffering from few of the ailments common in many large and popular dog breeds.

A Giant Schnauzer is a naturally athletic and energetic dog, which requires an outlet for these natural characteristics and qualities. A large garden that your dog can free run in would be ideal, but two long daily walks (first thing in the morning, and later in the evening) will usually suffice. As it is so playful, children who enjoy games of fetch, ball, and other energetic activities are often ideal partners for the Giant Schnauzer. A Giant Schnauzer and any children you may have should be encouraged to freely bond with each other, allowing it to become an ideal and cherished family companion and protection dog.
